Annual Trainee Awards 2009/2010

Description: Undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are invited to submit an abstract for the Annual Trainee Awards Competition.

Prizes will be awarded to trainees at the BBDC Annual Scientific Day on Friday, May 14, 2010 at The Old Mill Inn, Toronto.  Prize winners will not be asked to present a poster of their work.
Eligibility Requirements:
  • The trainee's supervisor must hold a full-time faculty appointment with the University of Toronto, and must be conducting diabetes research.
  • The trainee's supervisor must also be a registered member* of the BBDC at the time of abstract submission. (*Faculty who are new to the field of diabetes research and are not members of the BBDC can request free membership by contacting the Centre prior to submitting an abstract.   • The abstract must be directly related to an area of diabetes research.
  • The trainee must be first author and must have made the major contribution to the work presented. If two trainees are co-first authors, both trainees will be considered. If the abstract is selected to receive a prize, then the value of one prize will be split equally between the two trainees.
  • Trainees may not submit more than one (1) abstract.
  • Abstract must have been written within the last year and the current supervisor must be listed as one of the authors.
  • Trainees cannot submit an abstract which received a prize in last year’s Annual Trainee Awards competition.
Amount: Prizes may vary and normally range between $100 and $400 in value. Winners will receive their prize at the BBDC's Annual Scientific Day to be held on Friday, May 14, 2010 at The Old Mill Inn, Toronto.
Abstract Submission Procedure:
  1. Provide a cover page with the following information:
    • Trainee's name, complete mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address
    • Indicate if the trainee is an undergraduate student, graduate student or postdoctoral fellow
    • Supervisor's name, complete mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address
  2. Provide 1 copy of the abstract which includes the title and names of all authors.
    FORMAT
    : Abstract must be single spaced, 500 words maximum, font must not be smaller than 12 point, leave 1-inch margins on all sides. Trainees are encouraged to make full use of the space, providing an introduction/rationale, methods, results and discussion.
  3. Provide 3 "blind" copies of the same abstract with the title only. Do not include any authors' names or departmental affiliation on the three "blind" copies.
  4. Provide a brief letter of support from the trainee's supervisor indicating trainee's role in the work presented in the abstract. The trainee must be first author, and must have made the major contribution to the work presented.

Submission Deadline:

5 p.m., Tuesday, February 2, 2010.
Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.

Notification: All applicants will be notified by early April. Funding decisions will be posted on this website in May.
