Equipment Grants for Diabetes Research 2006/2007

Bi-annual Funding Program

Description: This is a biannual funding program. A call for applications is made once every two years in early summer. A minimum amount of $5,000 and a maximum amount of $30,000 is available from the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre (BBDC) to be used for the purchase of specific laboratory equipment for diabetes research. Applicants who wish to purchase equipment costing over $30,000 will be required to obtain the remaining funds from other sources before the BBDC will release the funds to successful applicants.
Eligibility:

The applicant (and all co-applicants) must be a full-time faculty member of the University of Toronto conducting diabetes research.

The applicant (and all co-applicants) must be a member of the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre. (Faculty who are new to the field of diabetes research and are not members of the BBDC can request free membership by contacting the Centre prior to submitting an application. Amount: One-time purchase award. Minimum award: $5,000. Maximum award: $30,000
Judgement Criteria:

Equipment to be used for diabetes research. Proposals will be judged on the merits of the applicant(s), and the ability of the applicant(s) to justify the importance of laboratory equipment requested within the context of their research.

Preference may be given to applicants who have not received a BBDC Equipment Grant in recent competitions.

Application Procedure:

Submit a completed application form to the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre by the deadline date.

Application Deadline: 3 p.m., October 24, 2006.
Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
Notification: All nominators, nominees, and the award recipient will be notified by March 2008.
Other Terms:
  • Successful applicants must arrange to have the Equipment Grant funds transferred to them and must purchase the equipment no later than June 30, 2007, otherwise the award will be withdrawn.
  • Proof of equipment purchase must be submitted to the BBDC within 2 months of the date of purchase. A copy of the purchase order OR invoice from the supplier AND proof of payment documentation will be required. Failure to provide proof of equipment purchase may result in future ineligibility for BBDC funding.
  • Where appropriate, the BBDC's support must be acknowledged in publications derived from the use of the equipment.
Reporting: Successful applicants must submit a brief written report describing the use of the equipment for specific experiments, number of users, and publications derived from use of the equipment. Report will be due two years after the initial date of equipment purchase. Failure to provide this report may result in future ineligibility for BBDC funding.
